This is a wonderful ANTIQUE VICTORIAN CAST IRON FIREPLACE FIRE COAL BASKET GRATE CIRCA 1900. The fire basket is in excellent used condition and has a wonderful custom made copper insert with wooden base for spring and fall flowers when winter has disappeared. The fireplace grate measures in the front: 19" wide, 10" deep in the middle, and 9 1/2 tall in the middle front. The back width is 15 1/2", back height is 10 3/4". The leg is 4 1/2 tall.
The grate is extra sturdy and weighs about 30 pounds. The grate is marked "United Mfg 38X". Also made cast iron wood stoves. The grate is made to hold logs or coal and the cast iron would retain and radiate the heat from the fire much more efficiently than a similarly sized fire laid on the hearth floor.
It works beautifully after over a 100 years. The fire bed swivels and lifts out to help with ash removal. There was a time when the humblest objects were produced with beautiful decorative details as this wonderful, cast iron fireplace grate illustrates. This grate was consigned by an elderly lady in her nineties. There is a wood base to hold the planter in place securely.
